What we do

We spread the culture of prevention, organize courses for emergency management and develop projects to safeguard archives, libraries and cultural heritage.

Our focus is not only on emergency and prevention, but also protection and enhancement.

For each of our objectives, on this page you will find some ideas for the best practices to have in place.

For further information, we invite you to consult our collection of documents and to attend our workshops.

Emergency

We promote a hands-on approach, based on practicing on real emergency scenarios, this is vital to handle emergencies in the most efficient way once they arise.

Preparation is the best tool to mitgate and reduce possible damaging.

In case of emergency, once people safety is assured, there are three lines of action to be followed: analysis, damage assessment, safety.

SOS Archivi spreads the culture of emergency management through webinars and events.

What to do when an emergency occurs?

Below are the fundamental steps to follow in an emergency situation

=

Status quo analysis

The analysis of the situation provides an understanding of the wider context of the emergency, allowing rescuers to develop a specific on-site action plan. A thourough examination of the emergency case makes it possible to determine the needs for the recovery of cultural heritage in the medium and long term.
=

Damage and risk assessment

The on-site damage and risk assessment allows the identification and collection of the damages and risks to the cultural heritage following a disaster. The results of this phase help to determine the priorities for the actions to be taken.
=

Securing

Securing involves actions that help containing damages and reducing risks, bringing the affected assets one step closer to recovery. At this stage, the actions to take for tangible and intangible assets vary.

Prevention

The implementation of preventive measures is the first step for safeguarding assets.

Even the smallest prevention actions can avoid major damages.

The storage in suitable locations or specific sites approved by law, together with safety and ad-hoc maintenance measures can protect an archive from natural calamities and man-made disasters.

SOS Archivi is committed to spread the culture of Prevention.

How does Prevention work?

Excellent results can often be obtained through small consistent actions and continuity

=

Location

The location of an archive plays a fundamental role in prevention. Attics, pipes, street floors or passageways are to be avoided.

=

Safety

The safeguard of an archive can be assured by the use of fire-fighting systems, the monitoring of environmental conditions and of the access routes, avoiding possible damages and malicious actions.

=

Maintenance

Scheduled maintenance actions such as cleaning, the ventilation of the storage location and the dedusting procedures allow to monitor the conditions of the archive over time and protect it.

Cultural enhancement

Antonio Beato

48 photos collected in the Touring Club archive and by Antonio Beato are in need of restoration. The photos have a high historical and cultural value both for the photographic technique and the materials used, and because they are evidence of the first archaeological-cultural journeys to the Egypt of the Pharaohs. 4 are the phases of the SOS Archivi project:

  • Restoration,
  • Digitization,
  • Exhibition,
  • Cultural enhancement

The purpose of this operation is not only to enhance and restore the works of Antonio Beato but also to tell the whole process and project to raise awareness as wide as possible on the importance and value of the archives:

With archives, culture is made and transmitted.
